Malea McGuinness

Talented and charismatic singer, songwriter, and storyteller, Malea McGuinness, has released her 3rd album, “Sweet”. Her lyrics are as alluring as her striking features and her voice adds an edgy tenderness to her work. Malea continues to please audiences on her tour with a vibrant sound that uniquely blends rock, country, and folk. Not only is Malea a skilled musician, but she is also an advocate for animal rights. Read on for an exclusive PYNKLipstick interview with this inspirational woman:

PYNKlipstick: You started your career on Broadway and as a recording artist have been on several tours. It seems like you thrive on live performances and you are quite seasoned at it. Do you ever get nervous about singing in front of a new audience?

Malea: Yes sometimes more than others-it’s actually easier for me to perform for a bigger crowd. With a smaller crowd it’s more intimate which I love but can be more nerve-wracking.

PYNKlipstick: You’ve opened for acts such as the Counting Crows, Michelle Branch, and most recently, the Gin Blossoms. What is your favorite part of being on tour?

Malea: I get to meet a lot of other musicians and see a lot of parts of the country that I wouldn’t normally get to see. I love stopping and eating in these Mom and Pop restaurants where they care so much-it’s not something you get so much of in Los Angeles!!!

PYNKlipstick: You donate a portion of your CD sales at your live performances to Humane Societies throughout the country. What sparked your support for this cause?

Malea: I had started volunteering for a no kill animal rescue in Los Angeles a few years ago and that really opened my eyes to what was going on in the animal community. It becomes very real and personal when you get to know and love these animals.

PYNKlipstick: Sweet is your third album release and is about “the declaration of self-discovery, the sacred value of life, and the power to love and to be loved.” If there were one message you’d like PYNKLipstick readers to take away from this album, what would it be?

Malea: One of my songs is called “Always Something to Believe In”. I have to listen to my own lyrics sometimes!

PYNKlipstick: What makes this album different from past albums?

Malea: Well the first thing was that I recorded it LIVE. Jim Scott, who produced Tom Petty, Wilco, produced this album and really liked to do things the old school way-and I don’t think I could ever go back to recording differently. We had been playing these songs for a long time live anyway and they just evolved into what you hear on the record.

PYNKlipstick: PYNKLipstick is about empowering women. Do you have any female role models who empower you? As a female role model, how do you hope to empower and inspire other women?

Malea: I really admire certain women around me. They aren’t famous or anything, just doing their best, raising children, working. They do it all without being patted on the back.

PYNKlipstick: What’s next for you? Where do you see yourself going from here?

Malea: I’d like to keep evolving as a writer/singer…
One day I’d like to build a rescue of my own..
I want to get wiser and happier as I get older…
